Essex Life, West Essex Life and Herts Life are market-leading lifestyle magazines that celebrate all that is great about life in these wonderful counties. At the heart of the magazines are features on villages, towns and cities, society occasions and food & drink events, hotels and restaurants, as well as fashion and interiors.

We are looking for a Sales Director who is inspirational at coaching, motivating and getting the best from sales teams (both field and office-based) that operate remotely and from our offices in Stevenage and Ipswich, covering both Hertfordshire and Essex. The teams are responsible for selling print and digital advertising opportunities across these market-leading products. They are working to monthly financial targets, focusing on customers’ needs, creating advertising campaigns, meeting new clients, and being on-brand in representing Archant.

This superb career opportunity has arisen from Archant`s continual growth and ambitious plans for the future of magazines. Based remotely but working across Hertfordshire and Essex you will be regularly travelling between the offices, including head office in Norwich. You will be a key individual within the Archant Group reporting directly to the Executive Director of magazines.

It’s important to emphasise that this is a hands-on operational role and for the majority of your week you will be out in the field with your team, dual calling, meeting clients, coaching and mentoring the teams to success. You will run monthly and weekly meetings where appointment setting, 1-1s, reviews and new ideas and goals are discussed.

The role will also give you scope to liaise with editorial and circulation teams to plan content and platforms. You will be involved in the ongoing development of these magazines, creating new strategies; injecting them with new ideas and seeing these titles go from strength to strength. You will also be involved in attending events and networking across the counties.

With overall budget responsibility you will need to be financially adept at understanding accounting lines and reporting targets, forecasts, budgets and plans.

This is an exciting, senior role within Archant and ideal for an experienced individual who has a real passion for the media industry and is seeking their next long-term challenging role. Practically you will need to live as central as possible within the counties of Essex and Hertfordshire as your home will be your base. There will be extensive driving throughout the entire week.


  • Proven experience in managing complex sales teams
  • Experience in national and regional titles
  • Strong coaching, mentoring and dual calling experience.
  • Full appreciation of one-to-one coaching to achieve and improve results
  • Strong sales background ideally within the media or magazine industry
  • Strong digital advertising knowledge
  • Financial ability to set targets and report on forecasts
  • Media/publishing background/knowledge
  • Tenacity, enthusiasm and determination
  • Outstanding communication skills, both written & verbal
  • Experience of driving teams to achieve set targets
  • Ability to review and adapt key business objectives as required
