A partnership between Facebook, local news publishers and the National Council for the Training of Journalists has enabled us to offer this fantastic opportunity.

Here at Archant London, the home of the Recorder series and Hackney Gazette, we are looking to hire a Community Reporter on a two-year fixed-term contract. We want applications from people who care about the area of Hackney and want to make a difference and be a voice for that community.

Previous journalism experience or education is not essential but you will have a passion/natural aptitude in this area. We’re especially keen to hear from people who believe they can help make our newsrooms more representative of the community of Hackney.


As a Community Reporter, your main role will be to engage with people in Hackney and curate, collate and create content relevant to them. You will take responsibility for developing relationships with all the diverse groups within the Hackney area. generating stories which re-engage that community with the Hackney Gazette.

You will be publishing packages of content to a high standard, writing headlines and uploading words, pictures, video and audio that you have sourced. Providing insight to the wider newsroom about the issues and concerns of specific communities will be an important part of the role.


You will receive industry-leading digital journalism training which you will then share into your newsrooms, as well as the gold-standard NCTJ journalism training to become a fully trained journalist.


  • Will have 5 GCSES with Maths & English at C or above (or equiv)
  • Passion for creating engaging content
  • Able to commit to a 2-year contract
  • Have a good knowledge of Hackney and its needs and wants
  • Enjoy meeting with their local community and providing it with a voice
  • Able to create print and digital content that gains a great following
  • May want a complete career change to become a journalist


The 3 tiers of entry are as follows:

  • Apprentice – £11000
  • Journalism degree/relevant exp – £16000
  • NCTJ qualified – up to £17500

  • 25 days holiday

  • Monday to Friday 9am to 5:30pm working hours
