Archant flagship newspaper the Eastern Daily Press has beaten off competition from national newspapers such as The Guardian, The Independent and The Mirror to win the prestigious Grand Prix award at the 2015 newsawards.

This was backed up by two Highly Commendeds for London24’s work with Honest John on their Renault UK campaign and in the Digital Innovation of the Year category, alongside a whole host of Commendeds in all three of the print, digital and business categories.

Taking the gold standard Grand Prix title, judges commenting that the EDP had brought renewed confidence to the regional newspaper sector, combining both print and digital transformation and success. The brand’s relevance to the local community was also cited, with judges crediting its innovation and endeavour.

The Grand Prix is awarded to the news media brand that brings together the most cohesive and compelling ‘print-digital-business’ offering to the market – the total package. According to the judges, it is the key award that “goes to the crux of the matter as far as the news media industry is concerned”.

EDP editor, Nigel Pickover, said: “This is an honour for everyone connected to the world of the EDP - from our great printers to our distribution teams and newsboys and girls - because teamwork and collaboration is at the heart of what we do.

“This award highlights how we are adapting to a fast-moving world and we are delighted the judges placed us ahead of national newspaper brands, saying we had brought renewed confidence to the regional sector. The EDP is immensely proud to be part of the changing world of Archant and today's news is testament to the team’s innovative and forward thinking attitude.”

Archant chief executive, Jeff Henry, said: “This is an outstanding achievement for Archant and deserved recognition for the creativity, hard work and pride that goes into our output right across the company – it should be celebrated. Great content produced by great people is something we have done for 170 years - it is at the core of Archant business and will continue to be as we lead the way in revolutionising local media and the role it plays in communities.”

Paul Hood, Digital Director for London24 said: “Digital innovation of the Year was one of the most hotly contended categories, with global brands including VICE news and the Times making the shortlist. For London24 to prevail over brands like these to win the ‘Highly Commended’ accolade is a great credit to Kate Nelson, editor of London24 and the rest of the team. An amazing result, well done.”
