The annual Regional Press Awards were held last Friday at the London Marriott Hotel in Grosvenor Square. The event recognises the very best in regional newspaper journalism from 2016, and this year’s ceremony singled out a number of Archant editorial colleagues as winners.
Emma Youle, from the Archant Investigations Unit, won Weekly Reporter of the Year. This award recognised her hard work on stories including ‘The Fugitive’, an investigative piece exploring a Hampstead businessman who was wanted on 348 criminal charges in South Africa.
Excellence in photography was also celebrated with Archant’s Sonya Duncan singled out as Weekly Photographer of the Year for her work on the Diss Mercury.
Other accolades included an award for former EDP and Evening News Education Correspondent, Martin George (who won Science and Education Journalist of the Year) and the Eastern Daily Press receiving highly commended in the ‘Daily/ Sunday newspaper with a circulation above 20,000’ category.
Chief Content Officer, Matt Kelly said: "I’m delighted for all the winners - and all their colleagues who supported them in their great work.
"It's been a good year for awards so far and, though they don't pay any bills, we should all be encouraged that, in a world where quality journalism is more important than ever, our reputation at Archant is up there with the best."
